Aanvi Kamdar, a chartered accountant and travel influencer who shared her adventures on Instagram under the handle @theglocaljournal, embarked on an outing to the well-known Kumbhe waterfall in Maharashtra’s Raigad district on July 16. Accompanied by seven friends, Kamdar’s trip took a tragic turn, as reported by news agency PTI.
While recording a video, Kamdar slipped and plunged into a 300-foot gorge, according to an official from the Mangaon police station.
Alerted by her friends, local authorities responded swiftly. The rescue operation involved the Coast Guard, Kolad rescue team, and Maharashtra State Electricity Board staff, as reported by NDTV.
“As soon as we arrived at the scene, we realized that the girl had fallen approximately 300-350 feet. Despite reaching her, it was challenging to retrieve her due to her injuries and the heavy rain. We decided to use a vertical pulley to get her out,” a rescuer told NDTV.
A rescuer told Lokmat that the situation was further complicated by large stones falling into the gorge.
Kamdar was extracted from the gorge after a six-hour rescue operation. However, she sustained severe injuries and succumbed to them at the hospital.
Her rescuers transported her to the nearby Mangaon taluka government hospital, where she passed away during treatment, confirmed the Mangaon police station official.
Authorities have advised tourists to exercise extra caution while visiting waterfalls during the monsoon season to prevent such tragic incidents.
